New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
