Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
