A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
